    Ash Roozendaal (Ngāti Awa) is on a mission to win the Open Men's singles titles at next weeks National Waka Ama competition. The current title holder is Tupuria King, who has held this title for five straight years and has never been beaten by any other NZ paddler in the 500m race. However, Ash beat Tupu at the worlds, which makes for an interesting competition come next week.

    Maketu Hoe Waka to take one single team to Waka Ama Nationals

    Maketu Hoe Waka, based in the Bay of Plenty place of Maketu, is one of the smallest clubs that will compete at this year’s Waka Ama Nationals. With one team going to represent the entire club. The team that will paddle under the club is Kaitunaz, an U16 boys’ team, which will compete in two races. It's a sign that ,despite the low numbers from Maketu, all regions want to be part of the 30th National competition this year.
