Ngāti Ruapani ki Waikaremoana intend to occupy the Aniwaniwa Visitors centre owned by the Department of Conservation in the hope that the conservation reopens the centre. However, the building has been deemed unsafe and has been vacant since 2008.

Who owns Lake Waikaremoana in the southern Urewera? A group of descendants of the original owners took a case to the Māori Land Court today to have the ownership of the lake bed revisited. The descendants, members of the Ruapani iwi are at odds with their neighbours - and to support their claim they have placed a rāhui over the lake.
At the end of the month, the Supreme Court will consider an application from Ngāti Ruapani in Waikaremoana regarding their water rights.
