Dr Keri Lawson Te Aho of Otago University who specialises in suicide says colonisation dating back to the 1700's has been a major contributor to suicide rates among Māori. This comes as the latest Ministry of Health figures show that suicide within Māori men has doubled those of non-Māori men since 2016.

Pharmac to fund more leukaemia medication
From the first of December the Government will fund Venetoclax (Venclexta), medication which will give relief to people living with chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. Polio survivor speaks out about his life with the disease
"I thought I was an ordinary kid until I reached school - when the other school kids started to give me nasty nicknames." Very hurtful were the memories polio survivor Phillip Rudolph remembers growing up in Manurewa, Auckland. In 1958, as a new-born baby Rudolph contracted the disease. His attempts to live a normal life were hindered because of his condition and led him to a turbulent life of crime. Since Rudolph has become a voice for other Polio survivors.

Hui called to address organ transplant issues
Māori are more likely to suffer from renal failure and diabetes, yet they're the least likely to undergo organ transplants. In the Hawkes Bay more than 70% of the population receiving dialysis are Maori and to increase awareness around donating and receiving organs a hui was held in the region today to better inform health providers and iwi organisations.

When Rangi Mahuika was diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago she felt alone and that support for her through her time of need wasn't forthcoming. A friend suggested the Te Mauri cancer support group based at Lower Hutt's urban Kōkiri Marae. The group focuses on a holistic Māori model of care for cancer sufferers.
