This Spirit of Christmas is a group set up and run by solo parents with a goal of helping provide a little bit of Christmas joy to those who find the season difficult and financially challenging. In the five years since its inception, around $4000 has been donated for the initiative which distributes 50 hampers per year.

Winter has arrived bringing with it the cold and to help the homeless rug-up for the coming months Habitat for Humanity hosted its Street Store in Henderson today where clothing, food and grooming was available to the needy free of charge.

Iwi step in to help flood victims
Edgecumbe is in clean up mode as more residents return home. The first lot of volunteers gave a helping hand to those cleaning their homes. The initiative between Ngāti Awa, Regional Councils and local groups had 80 volunteers help out in Edgecumbe today.

Māori urged to give blood
Māori are being encouraged to sign up as blood donors as part of today’s launch of the International Missing Type campaign. The campaign hopes to raise awareness of type A and O blood types which are the most common blood types in New Zealand and to get people thinking about how they can contribute to the blood bank.
