    Thousands have converged onto Mclean Park for the first day of the Te Matatini that is held in Hastings. Today hosts Ngāti Kahungunu opened the event with the official pōwhiri ceremony that saw Te Whānau a Apanui give Te Waka Huia the honour of handing over the prestigious Duncan McIntyre trophy.

    Hukarere and Hāto Hōhepa are doing their part in hosting the masses at this year’s Te Matatini. Around 50 Hukarere and 20 Hato Hohepa students helped to prepare and serve kai to manuhiri from all over the motu today.

    In a united front, Ngāti Kahungunu are preparing to welcome the world’s elite kapa haka teams and fans to Te Kahu o Te Amorangi senior national kapa haka competition Te Matatini 2017 at Mclean Park in Napier today. The welcoming ceremony will include a kaiwero specialist team, a massive welcoming crew and a paepae full of expert orators.
