Matua Kore is a 100-year-old marae that sits near the southern entrance to Taumarunui. From the road, it looks abandoned but new life is being breathed back into the marae with major restorations underway.
Taumarunui High School is being criticised by some in the community for not putting enough effort into teaching Te Reo Māori. Japanese is offered year round at the school while te reo Māori is offered to students for just 6 weeks of the year.
