    The Pacific Leadership Forum, a council of leaders from the Pacific community are determined to stop the spread of COVID-19. They recognise that their ethnicities are at the highest risk from this virus, and the possible effects of it on Māori. Teleiai Edwin Puni, chairman of the Forum explains: “It is a responsible action by our Pacific [communities]. Because we live closely with our Māori whānau(s), in the same neighbourhood(s). “By being responsible with the prevention and the readiness, it also protects our Māori and the people of Aotearoa.”

    The Pasifika Community are reeling in shock at the last minute cancellation of the Auckland Pasifika Festival. Many had come from overseas, bringing the treasures of their homelands to sell in Aotearoa. Fortunately, the out of work stallholders had been invited to other Auckland events to sell their wares. We spoke to several operators, who had set up shop at the Pop Up Pasifika flea market, held at the Pacific Business Hub and Manukau.

    Another ‘Pop Up Pasifika’ event will be held to support the stallholders who lost out due to the Pasifika Festival cancellation. The Pasifika Festival, held in Western Springs, has been going for 27 years and would normally attract about 60,000 over two days. This is an ideal opportunity for Pasifika businesses and community groups to do business and raise funds.
