    Tūpuna Maunga Authority plans to delete Wairaka from history, historian says

    Mataatua historian Pouroto Ngaropo claims that the Tūpuna Maunga Authority of Tamaki Makaurau is planning to make Te Ahi-Kā-a-Rakataura the sole name of Ōwairaka (Mt Albert). A group from Whakatāne iwi accompanied Ngaropo came to Ōwairaka Friday afternoon with. They oppose the name change, and the lack of consultation surrounding the approved earthworks, which will see the 345 foreign rākau cut down and replaced with native seedlings. Ngaropo claims that the earthworks, are a smokescreen to distract public attention from the Tūpuna Maunga Authority’s name change plans.

Whakatāne District Mayor Judy Turner says the council is working with Ngāti Awa and others to support those in need. Te Runanga o Ngāti Awa has also opened Te Mānuka Tutahi Marae and people are welcome to come and share and support one another.
