Episode guide - Matariki Magic

EPISODE 1. Sunday, 21 June, 7.30pm

This episode features Kaumatua Rereata Makiha as he shares his knowledge of the stars and Matariki’s place among them. While saving a work collegue, Doug Healey severed his spine in two. After major surgeries Doctors told him he would be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life. After 2 years, Doug is able to walk again and he is now coaching a group of people in preparation for the New York Marathon. A rōpu of young wahine, known as Seven Sisters, grace us with their vocal performances to celebrate Matariki. 

EPISODE 2. Sunday, 28 June, 7.30pm

The Magic of Matariki comes in the form of celebrating the New Year and the sharing the stories of those working in our community. The Auckland City Council launched their Matariki with The Long Hakari, a special menu put together by two Māori chefs Tu Fearn and Nancye Pirini. Also showing this Matariki Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet translated into te reo Māori. We take a peek at the kaumatua kapa haka roopu the Auckland Māori Anglican Group led by Joh Tapene. Every Monday night, parents of 6 children, Kiri Swannell and husband Kevin provide a soup for the homeless from the Napier Bus Depot and we revisit the Seven Sisters for another brilliant performance.
