Design Inspiration

Linking back to Māori mythology, Ngā Pou Aratohu o Whakaata Māori is a digital platform that reinforces our role as indigenous broadcasters to the values that guide us and protect our stories in the vast space where we can watch content anytime, anywhere.

Created by Producer Lanita Ririnui, in collaboration with Cam Swainson and InGame Ltd, the Matariki AR Experience uses the world’s first markerless Web AR platform.

This design is inspired by the celestial compass, in which our ancestors navigated the seas to get to Aotearoa and beyond.

We ground our experience in the Earth Mother Papatuānuku with our tohu (logo). From there, our pou grow like we do, as children of the God of the Forest, Tāne Māhuta.

In the giving of light, the God of weather Tāwhirimātea strikes each pou to reveal a more sculptured and colourful light display. As the Māori God who inspired the name Matariki, our guidance for the year is set, just as it is when following Matariki.

The pou design have been influenced by taonga that are already part of Whakaata Māori. As a broadcast station, contemporary metallic pou sit outside the building and various pou over the years have been made into lightboxes for production sets. These AR pou take a contemporary look at the mix of elements and light.

The tekoteko representation on top remind us of all our tupuna who have brought us to this point in time, and continue to watch over us in our journey ahead.
