EPISODE 13 - How Apārangi Orbits Tamanuiterā

Learn how Apārangi Orbits Tamanuiterā

  • A cake tin
  • Orange or yellow play dough
  • A bouncy ball

  1. Start by rolling the ball of orange or yellow dough and squish it down in the center of the cake tin so it sticks to the bottom – this will be our sun.
  2. Next, place your bouncy ball, this will represent APARANGI, in the cake tin and use your wrists to move the cake tin in a circular motion so the ball rolls around the outside of the pan.
  3. Do you see how the ball rotates around the dough? This is exactly how APARANGI and the other planets orbit Tamanui te rā. Like the edges of the tin, the Sun’s gravity keeps them in their orbits
