Back in Auckland, Pio & Sonia share a couple of their favourite eating spots with us. Pio introduces us to the spicy food of 'Paradise', while Sonia invites us to her regular eatery 'The Tasting Shed'.
It’s fritter festival time in Whangarei. Pio & Sonia have arrived to help local contestants Jess and Zak from the Butter Factory Café, and with over a dozen contestants, competition is fierce.
Next stop is the busy little town of Wellsford. Pio and Sonia are invited to Oruawharo Marae to harvest local delicacies. Later, chefs Amber Rose and Kate Hassen prepare a tasty kai.
Sonia & Pio visit Waihi, gateway to the Coromandel and the Bay of Plenty. Sonia takes on the surf to collect some shellfish, while Pio sets the net to target mullet and flounder.
Situated 25km north-west of Auckland city is the rural community of Kumeu. With plenty of wineries, orchards and roadside produce stalls, it’s the perfect place for a kai safari.
