As part of Māori Television’s comprehensive Anzac Day coverage, we are giving you the opportunity to create a personal message of remembrance for friends or family who took part in past wars or conflicts. 

Every message will be represented by a poppy placed on our virtual cenotaph.  You can click on the poppies to read the individual messages.

This poppy is in remembrance of my grandfather Trooper Hubert John Matson 11/692. His unit the Wellington Mounted Rifles, 6th Manawatu Squadron landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula on the 13th May, 1915, over 2 weeks after the main landings. In the August Offensive his unit was part of the attacking force that seized the heights at Tabletop in a silent night advance. On the 8th of August his unit relieved the shattered Wellington Infantry on the Chunuk Bair summit and for 24 hours he fought for his life against ferocious Turkish attempts to throw them off. He was wounded in a blast that killed 3 of his closest mates. After recovering from his wounds in England he spent the rest of the war as a provost (military policeman) in Palestine. His war service was one of the longest of any at that time. He signed up for the Mounteds in early 1914 and didn't arrive back in New Zealand until March 1919. Almost 5 years away from his family.

Remembering my Great Uncle- Private Edward Ivanhoe Woodhouse Lee 6/2184 Canterbury Infantry Battalion 5th Reinforcements. Fought in Gallipoli. Landed in Gallipoli around 6 August. Died of wounds on 11 August 1915. Thanking him and the hundreds of other men and women that contributed or sacrificed their lives so we could live ours in Peace. Gone but not forgotten R.I.P 🙏🏼 Chunuk Bair Memorial has his name inscribed. His body was never found.
