Finals for the National Māori Basketball tournament kicked off yesterday afternoon in Rotorua. The under 17's men's final was played between two of the longest running Māori Basketball clubs Morehu and Ngāti Toa.
Ngāti Toa managed to win the tip off in the first quater, however they were unsuccessful in getting the ball in the hoop which left Morehu to score from a fast break.
In the second quarter, Morehu's defence was weak during Ngāti Toa’s three pointers. But Morehu came back and led by just one point before half time with 19 points to 18.
In the third quarter Morehu toughened up their defence and fought for the ball at every opportunity. Morehu became strong off the back board earning themselves the lead into the final quarter 31-29.
But the final quarter ended in a draw 45-45. The game went into overtime and in the last seconds of the game Morehu took the win 48-47.
