Hundreds have gathered in Ahipara to farewell murdered 16 year old Luke Tipene today. The promising junior league representative was killed outside a party in central Auckland last week.

Mourners at Roma Marae spoke of the huge loss his death has caused and the legacy he leaves behind. A group from the local community welcomed the funeral procession with haka, as family and friends carried Luke to Whangarei cemetery to his final resting place alongside his father.

The 16 year-old charged with his murder has appeared in the Auckland Youth Court and remains in custody until he appears in the Auckland High Court at the end of the month.

Te Kāea reporter Wepiha Te Kanawa will have more details tonight at 5:30 and 7:00 pm with subtitles.
