A mother and her six-year-old child have been taken to Whangarei Hospital after being trapped by a car which smashed into a shop in Whangarei.

Northern Police Communications Manager, Sarah Kennett, told Te Kāea the driver of the vehicle was an elderly man. He crashed into The Cheesecake Shop on Tarewa Road. The mother and daughter were inside the shop when the accident occurred.

“Both the woman and her daughter have been taken to Whangārei Hospital with minor to moderate injuries,” Kennett says.

Although it’s believed the elderly driver was not injured, he was also taken to hospital for a check-up.

Police are investigating.
