A Star Wars wedding anniversary gift proves The Force is still Strong

By Wepiha Te Kanawa

Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the seventh movie of the Star Wars saga, hit global ticket sales of $371mil on its first day.

Wairere Iti and his two children Maia and Atticus love Star Wars. They love it so much they have filmed, edited and produced their own Star Wars themed video.

Wairere Iti (Ngāi Tūhoe) told Te Kaea, “I am a sci-fi freak, I'm into Star Trek and Star Wars. All my friends that know me know that's what I’m into.”

The 3 minute cameo that they produced features Wairere and his two children dressed in Jedi robes travelling through the galaxy in a 'Millennium Falcon.’

“Everyone thought it was the real movie to begin with and then when they started to read it they all started to catch on there was something not right, except my wife,” says Wairere.

It featured at a packed out Auckland cinema on the film's release date, the day which happens to be Wairere and his wife Reina's 10 year anniversary.

“My wife thought it was totally legit and it wasn't until we popped up on the screen she was like ‘Oh my gosh, I can't believe you guys are on the screen, what's going on?’ so she was really surprised.”

Wairere says the next two Star Wars films are set to release on the date of his 11th wedding anniversary next year. He hopes to make a sequel then to this year's cameo.
