Heavy metal band Alien Weaponry rocks out in te reo

By Taroi Black

It's been a busy year for high school band Alien Weaponry from Northland.

In addition to placing second at the Smokefree Rockquest and Pacific Beats competition, the heavy metal band also won the Youth Performance Trust's Native Reo Award for their song, Rū ana te Whenua, which was composed entirely in te reo Māori.

Henry de Jong says, “It's the best thing that's ever happened to our band.  It’s caused a lot of publicity and it’s very similar to haka.”

They have been awarded a $10,000 grant from New Zealand on Air, which will go towards producing and completing the video for their song, Rū ana te Whenua.

They are the youngest recipients ever to receive the grant. The band has been composing songs for the last five years.

Alien Weaponry will release their new song, Uruta, in the New Year.
