Budget 2016 - New funding allocated for housing

The National government has allocated $200 million for around 750 places for individuals and families with pressing housing needs and assistance with meeting the cost of rising rents.

$42 million has also been allocated towards 3,000 emergency housing places a year and the establishment of a new emergency housing Special Needs Grant.

$36 million has also been assigned to ensure further availability of drier and healthier homes.

$100 million will also be provided to free up surplus Crown land for housing developments in Auckland.

Labour leader, Andrew Little has criticised the amount of budget allocated to housing claiming the government is out of touch with the average New Zealander.
