Marae Kai Masters starts tomorrow on Māori Television

Wednesday July 31, 2013

MARAE KAI MASTERS, the country’s newest competitive cooking show, starts tomorrow – Thursday, August 1 at 7.30pm – on Māori Television.

Hosted by Te Kohe Tuhaka and Nevak Rogers, the series pits the best cooks from eight marae around the country against each other in a series of culinary challenges overseen by guest judges including Nadia Lim and Cameron Petley.

Rogers says the series captures the irreverent, laugh-out-loud humour of marae cooks as well as the aroha between teams going hard for their marae.

In episode one, team members from Tu Teao Marae (Ngati Awa) in Te Teko (‘Texas’) face off in the kitchen against Kaipara’s Whiti te Ra Marae (Ngati Whatua).

The Texans are old-school, hearty cooks, whose specialties are hangi, boil up and kanga pirau (rotten corn).  Vegetarianism is a foreign term to the team, who take their kai very seriously, but always have a good time in the kitchen.

Whiti Te Ra is the only Auckland team in the competition.  Growing up in the resource-rich Kaipara, they say their grandparents' homes were like restaurants, serving local duck, whitebait, scallops, home-grown fruit and vegetables and wild mushrooms.

MARAE KAI MASTERS is proudly supported by the Ministry for Primary Industries and the series promotes safe food preparation and handling practices.

The winning team will go home with prizes worth more than $40,000 for their marae, including a Moffat oven worth $9500, Mighty Light stackable chairs worth $16,000, a jumbo multi kai cooker, a year’s supply of kaimoana from Aotearoa Fisheries, $5000 in vouchers from Southern Hospitality and $5000 cash.

Tune in to Māori Television on Thursday, August 1 at 7.30pm to watch some of the country’s best marae cooks sweat in the kitchen as they go head-to-head to take out top place in MARAE KAI MASTERS.
