Poi Performance - Takawirihanga

Māori English

I waenganui pū harakeke ahau
Whakarongorongo ana ki ngā hau
Oho ana tōku wairua, oho ana tōku wairua

Ki ngā takawirihanga o te poi
E mireirei ana ka toko
Te whakaaro "i ahu mai koe i hea"?
Te whakaaro "i ahu mai koe i hea"?

Nā Io Matua Kore
Ka noho i a Whaea Rikoriko

Ka moe i a Pākoki
Ka puta ko Harakeke
Nā Tāne Māhuta ka moe i a Repo
Ka puta ko Raupō

I a rāua tahi ka puta ko Muka
Ko Taura, ko Here, ko Awe
Ka tae mai ki a koe e Poi

Ehara tōu mana i te mana i takea nō nanahi
Engari tōu mana nō tuawhakarere,
nō tuawhakarere
Ake, ake tonu atu

From within the flax
I hear the wind
My spirit is awakened

By the twirling of the poi
It's movement defiant. The thought is posed
From whence did you come?
From whence did you come?

It was from Io the parentless
Who took unto him Whaea Rikoriko
From who begat the planets
And the grades of night

Who beat Rangi Sky Father who stands here
and Earth Mother who lays here.
From their union came Tāne Māhuta

Tis Tāne!
It was Tāne who lay with Pākoki
And begat Harakeke
It was Tāne who lay with Repo
And begat Raupō

From them both, Muka
Rope, bind and plume
Combined; give form to you oh Poi

Your prestige is not of yesterday
But of aeons ago
Of time immemorial
Infinity
