The competitive world of hairdressing and make-up are in the spotlight on Māori Television’s reality series Head Start.
Hosted by the popular presenter Mātai Smith, Head Start follows a group of aspiring hair and make-up artists from auditions to finale as they compete for an $18,000 scholarship to New Zealand’s premier hair and make-up school, Cut Above Academy, based in the heart of Auckland CBD. The winner will also spend six weeks’ work experience in Māori Television’s make-up department, as well as a year’s supply of Matrix hair care products.
The series introduces the contestants as they survive a demanding audition from which an expert judging panel selects 13 hopefuls who go on to compete in a different hair and make-up challenge each week. Over the series, some of New Zealand’s top hair, make-up and fashion experts join the show in the search for one winner. Each episode also features an interactive tutorial in the techniques covered in the challenges.
