“…I never knew the importance of ANZAC day until last year when this opportunity was given to me.”
Samoan, Chinese and Niuean.
Leulumoega Tuia (Grandfather and Dad’s village)
Fasitoouta (Mum and Grandmothers Village)
World War I or II Veteran Relatives: I don’t know if any of my family served in World War I or II. But my Great Grandfather Fa’amasino Koon-Wai-You a.k.a ‘Judge’ was a lieutenant in the Navy Marines and was also a pay clerk and welder.
I don’t really have a favourite part of ANZAC day because if I’m being honest, I never knew the importance of ANZAC day until last year when this opportunity was given to me. But, now that I know the true meaning of ANZAC, I’m looking forward to it this year!
What I’m looking forward to in Turkey is everything! To learn new things like the different cultures, religions, traditions, meeting new people, and visiting where soldiers fought and died. But, most of all I’m looking forward to representing MI, Manurewa, South Auckland, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.
I think it’s important to celebrate ANZAC day because, we all need to remember and acknowledge those who fought for our country. If they didn’t fight for us, I can’t imagine what our country would be like today.
