    Exponents of the haka world are paying homage to one of their most respected leaders, Te Makarini Temara, who passed away in Whakatāne overnight at the age of 58. They say that the man who was the driving force behind the kapa haka of Ruatāhuna Kākahu Mauku, a respected elder of the Ngāti Kuri and Tamakaimoana people and a prominent figure at Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi is a huge loss.

    Hukarere and Hāto Hōhepa are doing their part in hosting the masses at this year’s Te Matatini. Around 50 Hukarere and 20 Hato Hohepa students helped to prepare and serve kai to manuhiri from all over the motu today.

    Ngāti Kahungunu prepares to welcome the masses

    In a united front, Ngāti Kahungunu are preparing to welcome the world’s elite kapa haka teams and fans to Te Kahu o Te Amorangi senior national kapa haka competition Te Matatini 2017 at Mclean Park in Napier today. The welcoming ceremony will include a kaiwero specialist team, a massive welcoming crew and a paepae full of expert orators.
