    Hori Pomana honoured at ASB Polyfest pōwhiri

    The 42nd Auckland secondary schools ASB Polyfest has got underway in Manukau City.  The southern hemisphere's largest cultural competition began with a traditional welcome ceremony of the schools and trophies, including three new carved taonga to commemorate one of the festival's stalwarts' the late George Hori Pomana.

    Hundred's made the ferry trip to Matakana Island to pay their final respects to the former head of James Cook High's Māori unit, George (Hori) Pomana who was buried today.  It was the largest funeral to take place on the small community island, and his immediate and wider Manurewa community whānau want his legacy in Māori education and waka ama to continue.

    George Pomana now lies on the porch of the house he help to complete. The respected teacher (62) died yesterday after a long illness.  Today he was welcomed by students of James Cook High Schook to Te Pou Herenga Waka Marae, where he will lie for one night before returning to his marae.

    He dedicated his life to the community of James Cook High School in Auckland. 62-year-old George (Hori) Pomana (Ngāti Kahungungu, Ngāi Te Rangi) passed away from a terminal illness last night, surrounded by his whānau at Totara Hospice in Manurewa South Auckland.
