    The Māori performing arts community is mourning the loss of Dr Ngapo Wehi, QSM. The 82-year old leader from Te Whakatōhea, Ngāi Tūhoe, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau-a-Apanui and Ngāti Kahu passed away in the early hours of this morning. His funeral is being held at Parihimanihi Marae, Waihirere.

    Legendary kapa haka exponent Ngapo Wehi passes away

    Dr. Ngapo Wehi, QSM (Ngāi Tūhoe, Te Whakatōhea, Ngāpuhi, Te Whānau a Apanui, Ngāti Kahu),  is the most decorated exponent of Māori performing arts and holds the record for the most national wins in the history of kapa haka. Today the legendary composer passed away surrounded by his loving family in Gisborne. Dr. Wehi was 82-years-old.

    Iwi want Crook Cook statue rolled in favour of tipuna Rakaiatane

    Ngāti Oneone is calling for the 'Crook Cook' statue on top of Gisborne's Kaiti Hill to be replaced with that of Māori chief Rakaiatane. Iwi spokesperson Nick Tupara says it is appropriate given the current statue is not actually Captain Cook but an unknown Italian admiral and Rakaiatane was chief at the time of Cook's landing.
