ROUND TWO FOR THE SEARCH FOR THE BEST MĀORI SINGERS IN AOTEAROA

The quintessential Māori entertainment series that seeks out the best Māori singers in the country opens the floodgates once again for a new generation of pop star wannabes as the second series of MĀORIOKE launches on Māori Television.

Judged this year by seasoned entertainer Brannigan Kaa and Māori diva Whirimako Black, the second series launches after the MĀORIOKE RECAP SPECIAL, screening this Sunday June 26 at 8.00 PM.

The MĀORIOKE RECAP SPECIAL traces the footsteps of MĀORIOKE series one title-holder Tamehana Campbell in the year since his win. Documenting the creative process of writing and recording a single, this one-off special includes all the various elements involved – from artist management and mentoring to recording sessions. Tamehana Campbell is now an emerging artist and has experienced the tragic loss of co-songwriter Phil Fuemana and an upheaval from Wanganui to Wellington in the tumultuous year since he first won the first series.

Then, the launch of the second series proper on Sunday July 3 at 8.00 PM sees contestants Ripeka Gray (Christchurch), Luke Butters (Hamilton), Tunisia Grace (Pukekohe), Robert Wall (Christchurch) and Shelley Karaitiana (Whakatane) out-warble each other to claim their spot in the semis.

From Bic Runga to Baby Face, these hopefuls kick off a second rip-roaring season that concludes with one grand winner seizing the top prize of a recording contract with Doughboy Records. Plus, all finalists in the series will embark on a tour of the country’s five main centres to perform live gigs.

For the contestants to follow in the series, judging will be tight and critical. Brannigan Kaa is arguably one of the most popular recording artists on the Māori radio network for his 90’s classic Maumahara Noa Ahau, which was originally released on his album Tangiora 2.

And, Whirimako Black’s career has soared to new heights since signing to Mai Music in 2004. With domestic album sales already in excess of 10,000 units on her first two self-released albums – Shrouded in the Mist and Hohou Te Rongo – she released her third album Tangihaku in May 2004. Now onto the release of her fourth album – Kura Huna – Whirimako Black’s credentials to judge of the new series of MĀORIOKE are solid.

MĀORIOKE – bringing you the best up-and-coming Māori singers in Aotearoa on Māori Television.

GIRLS CAN DO ANYTHING!

Life’s a game and it’s all about rules. Māori Television welcomes the return of E KŌ! – the liberated, liberal and lippy series made for mana wāhine that shows viewers how to have some fun making those rules!

Premiering its second series this Friday June 24 at 8.00 PM, the Flirt Media production is a television show made for women with attitude. Presented with sass by Veeshayne Armstrong (Ngapuhi) and Sophie Hakaraia (Ngāti Raukawa), the show provides a colourful romp through everything from rodeo-riding to lawn bowls, hip hop to cheerleading.

Spirited and athletic, E KŌ! is a show that celebrates strong, independent and adventurous women. Each episode, Armstrong and Hakaraia challenge the status quo by trying their hand at numerous sporting activities and interviewing well known mana wahine who are defying the odds in their chosen fields.

The all-surfing, plane-jumping, catwalk-strutting Armstrong puts aside her Mai FM DJ and Māori Television panel show expertise to invite viewers along for the ride. A vivacious and familiar face of many television programmes and films, Armstrong takes a spin on Aotearoa’s fastest jet boat experience in the first episode. Travelling at 100kph in just 4.5 seconds, Armstrong sets a blazing pace for the rest of the series to come.

Meanwhile, actress Sophie Hakaraia visits with Queenstown-based Hana Sullivan, who although has only been snowboarding since 2000 has already made a name for herself as a champion boarder both in Aotearoa and abroad. Hakaraia continues to deliver intelligent and entertaining interviews further along the series with key mana wahine including ex-Silver Fern Bernice Mene, upcoming model Huia Ngapo, mau rākau and taiaha expert Tania Stanley and motorcross champion Katherine Prumm.

Join in a celebration of the achievements of Māori women with the premiere of the new season of
E KŌ!
, this Friday June 27 at 8.00 PM.
