Each year, the greatest young speakers in Māoridom gather to compete against each other to find out who the penultimate kaikōrero of that year are. Maori Television is proud to premiere MANU KŌRERO – a series that showcases the entrants and winners from Ngā Manu Kōrero Speech Competition 2004. Premiering on Tuesday May 3 at 5.00 PM, the 18-part, 15-minute short series presents the crème de la crème of New Zealand’s secondary school orators, tomorrow’s leaders and whaikōrero exponents. Possessing a healthy appetite for competition and an even more healthy appetite for the furtherance of Māori language and culture, youth in their hundreds gathered at Arena Manawatu in the Manawatu-Horowhenua district to push their oratory skills to-and-beyond the limits. Competing for the Senior Māori, Junior Māori, Senior English and Junior English categories, the competition drew representatives from schools as far north as Pompallier College in Whangarei and as far south as Avonside Girls High School and Mairehau High School in Christchurch. Presented by Te Hamua Nikora with speech footage spliced with interviews of the speakers and their friends, the premiere episode kicks off with Ta-anga Diaz from Nelson Boys High School. MANU KŌRERO will continue to screen on Māori Television every Tuesday night at 5.00 PM.
