PUWERA: Hot Māori and Pacific Designers strut their stuff at New Zealand Fashion Week. Once a year, New Zealand’s fashion industry explodes into the public realm over five days of fabric, fizz and fabulous celebrities for the Air New Zealand Fashion Week. This year, in the midst of the hectic week, three Māori and Pacific Island fashion labels represented Pacific style with the best and they are the subject of a new documentary PUWERA, screening on Māori Television on Thursday November 18 at 8.30 PM. Nadine Freundlich, Dawnraid and Overstayer were three of the fashion design labels competing at the annual trade show, held at the Auckland Viaduct from October 18 to October 21. Designed to accommodate registered buyers and attract the almighty international dollar, the event pulls in a notable list of international and local fashion journalists baying for fresh offerings. For the designers, being there is everything.
Nadine made a successful debut at last year’s event and secured her dream of opening her own boutique in central Auckland. She has set her sights high and is well on her way to becoming one of New Zealand’s fashion elite and one of our leading Māori fashion designers. Meanwhile, the Dawnraid label is a longstanding streetwear / hip hop brand that saw its humble beginnings at the Otara Flea markets and has progressed to the debut in the esteemed annals of this year’s Fashion Week. Operated by Samoan-born Brotha D (Danny Leaosavaii) and business partner Andy Murnane, the south Auckland-based label has amassed a small fortune which has enabled the duo to set up a trust for at-risk youth and fund a successful recording label. Another huge name in New Zealand’s hip hop scene – King Kapisi – is back from a successful European tour to front his streetwear / hip hop label Overstayer with business partners Geoff Brown and Drew Gregory at Fashion Week. Taking charge of the all-important entertainment factor to the show, Kapisi and co took streetwear to a new level with their last minute decision to include new designs in the show and managed to raise several eyebrows in the process. Tune in to Māori Television for a dose of glamour and gears on PUWERA, Thursday November 18 at 8.30 PM. |
