Young Ngāpuhi descendant Jason Matthews has recently departed for the Netherlands to attend the European Major League Baseball Academy.

18-year-old Matthews has worked overtime prior to the camp, hitting the indoor batting cages in Pakuranga, the gym and also doing individual speed work to achieve his goal.

He says “To make it to the Major Leagues that's the ultimate dream, my goal now is to try get selected and scouted over there.”

The camp will be run by ex Major League Baseball players and coaches over the next three weeks, with selectors from top Baseball sides also scouting talent.

Earlier this year, Jason played for Auckland Central in the New Zealand Under 18 Baseball Championships held in Auckland.

Having made the transition from softball to baseball, Matthews' skills are obvious. He says going away to the Major League Baseball Academy will allow him to grow in the sport.

"It'll help me heaps. I need to experience it because I want to try and make it into the Majors or the Minors."
