Young duo make New Zealand weightlifting squad

  • Auckland

Two young men who are best friends have both qualified for the first time for the youth NZ weightlifting team. Montel Tivoli and Isaiah Papali'i are the talented pair.

They train together at the Zealous Crossfit gym in West Auckland and that's where our reporter Rewa Harriman caught up with them.

The boys work hard. Everyday they're training and working on their craft.

All their effort has paid off, both qualifying for the NZ youth team who will travel to New Caledonia next month for the Oceania Youth Games.

The best mates couldn't be happier to make the team.

The boys are 15 years old and it was Isaiah who introduced his best mate Montel to Crossfit and weightlifting.

Isaiah's Uncle Jan, who is also their coach, runs Zealous Crossfit and knows how committed the two lifters are.

Like many sports though, travel and opportunities come at a cost, both lifters need to raise $2000 for the trip.

The main focus for the boys is to keep lifting the bar.
