SKYCITY Breakers development player and young Tall Black Tai Wynyard (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Maniapoto, Tainui) has chosen his American University, which means he will play for the Kentucky Wildcats in 2016.

Te Kāea spoke with young Wynyard’s mother and she confirmed the recruitment.

He is the first player to commit to the Kentucky Wildcats for the 2016 recruiting class, despite scholarship offers from Villanova and Texas.

Wynyard joins the handful of New Zealanders to play in the NBA, most notable to date is Steven Adams who plays for Oklahoma City Thunder.

Last month, Tai and his father, world renowned woodchopper, Jason Wynyard, made history winning the 2014 Māori Sportsperson of the Year Award.

Young Wynyard also took out the category for Junior Sportsperson of the Year at the annual Māori Sports Awards event.

Te Kāea will have more info at 5:30pm and 7pm with subtitles.
