Maia Wilson trains day and night, even during school lunch breaks and the results speak volumes as the 17 year-old was named as the youngest trialist at the Silver Ferns trials in Auckland this month for the first time.
Maia says, “It's so surreal, I'm a seventeen year-old Mt Albert grammar School girl student, coming into the big leagues with all these Silver Ferns and everyone in the ANZ Champs, for me, someone that doesn't play in the ANZ Champs.”
Maia is the only secondary school member that has been asked to trial, the goal shooter will come up against the best players in NZ, as they all vie for a spot in the Silver Ferns squad that will compete in the New World Netball Series and also the Netball World Cup this August held in Australia.
“It's definitely going to be difficult, for me it's going to be a massive learning experience and I'm still going to try my best in everything I can do, but at the end of the day and if I dont make it, that's ok I'm still seventeen” says Maia.
It's been a big week for the descendant from Te Rarawa and Te Akitai Waiohua, who just on Monday, helped her school netball team, Mt Albert Grammar, win the National College Netball title.
The Silver Ferns trials will be held on the 29th of this month.
