NZ win first gold medal in Taekwondo at Pacific Games

By Rahia Timutimu

On day 13 of the Pacific Games, New Zealand have finally won a gold medal at the Games in Papua New Guinea, thanks to Andrea Kilday in the under 46kg category in Taekwondo.

The 32-year-old winning last night now puts New Zealand at 14th place on the competition ladder.

Hosts Papua New Guinea are not finding it difficult to win medals, sitting at top of the table with 167 medals in total and counting.

Papua New Guinea are still ahead on the competition table with 6 golds more than New Caledonia, and with the amount of talent they have on the track and field, there's no doubt more medals will be added to this tally.

New Caledonia had the chance to win another gold and get closer to Papua New Guinea on the medal table, when they took on Vanuatu in the Men’s Doubles finals.

From the start New Caledonia showed they were the favourites.

Despite Vanuatu doing everything they could to win their second gold medal of the games, New Caledonia were too strong, winning gold against Vanuatu.

In beach volleyball, Tonga and Cook Islands played in this semi-final, Tonga in the red only losing once in their four matches.

Cook Islands were strong and they thought they were going away with the win, but Tonga snuck in there to make it count, and to win the match to make the finals tomorrow.
