The New Zealand Arm Wrestling Championships were held in Auckland this weekend and amongst the many competitors was this year's winner Maateiwarangi Heta-Morris from Te Arawa and Ngāti Awa.
It's not a sport everyone will warm to, however, those who attended this event are passionate about it, including Māoridom's very own Maateiwarangi Heta-Morris.
He's the best arm wrestler in the country and is the current Oceania champion, but his success doesn't stop there.
He says, “I'm here to see if everyone has improved a lot. I've gotta keep my game up. I know that everyone else is training harder."
After competing in the World Championships in Poland last year Maateiwarangi took out 11th place overall.
Maateiwarangi is in the 100kg upwards section and this year he will fly to Lithuania to compete at the World Championships.
"I'm training as hard as I can but I still need to maintain my lifestyle though."
He has a message for those who wish to follow in his footsteps.
"Just give it a go. It's really addictive once you give it a go you just can't stop, so if anyone wants to come and do some arm wrestling in Rotorua, let me know."
