The competition known as Ngā Hau e Whā brings together many Māori softball players.

It's an event that promotes the potential of descendants from various iwi and its main objective is to increase the participation of Māori in this sport.

An official welcoming took place to begin the day's proceedings.

This tournament was merely a desire in the minds of many people.  However, that desire came to fruition today.

It's an exciting time for those who have come to represent their iwi and despite it being only the first tournament of its kind, there are already 5 men's teams and 4 women's teams.

Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou, Ngāi Tūhoe, Tainui and Ngāti Pākehā have come to support this new event and although it's a competition, the main focus is networking.

This is also another avenue where pro-players can come back to their iwi and share their skills and knowledge with the younger generation.

There is a common thought among these talented Māori and that is for this to be an ongoing event.
