Seventeen year old goal shooter Maia Wilson will be joining Mojo Pulse next season. The talented Mount Albert Grammar School student has signed a one year contract to link with the Wellington Franchise.
After a lengthy discussion with her parents, Maia Wilson will take a year off basketball to focus on her netball aspirations.
She says, “At the end of the day, if I was really loving my basketball I would have gone, so it was sort of down to it was a passion thing.”
She turned down a very lucrative basketball scholarship at the University of Idaho to follow her dream to play in the ANZ Championship next season.
Wilson says, “I have been lucky. I play with people like Jamie Lee Price, Kayla Cullen sometimes comes, and Maria Tutaia is with our club.”
She is the youngest players to be signed to the Mojo Pulse and joins the likes of Phoenix Karaka, Elias Shadrock, Ameliaranne Wells and others.
“And Jodi hopefully who will sign on and all these amazing people they singed. Chelsea Pitman and I think the players they are getting are so amazing for my personal grown as a netballer,” says Wilson.
She has represented New Zealand in Basketball and Netball and was a part for the Tall Ferns. She also trialled for the Silver Ferns last month.
Wilson says, “It's sort of a bit of a calling when you get a Silver Ferns trial at seventeen and that was just like OMG it just opens my world up to so many thing.”
But for now she will focus on her final year at school.
