The power and strength of our women was the theme of the night at Kawerau's Ron Handley Centre last night and boxing is the main drawcard, bringing in spectactors from near and far in support.
“These women are from the community of Kawerau and they are under the boxing club of Kawerau” says Naomi Herewini, of Te Whānau a Apanui.
For nearly two years now, this event has been in the pipeline by Kawerau Boxing Gym trainer Warwick Godfery, and for some of these boxers it's a new experience.
“I've played many sports but that's pretty full on” states Davina Thompson, meanwhile fellow competitor Zhantellie Te Riini says that, “Just get in there it's fun it looks scary but it's fun.”
There was even a group of supporters who travelled all the way from Ōpōtiki to get in behind their boxer.
"My heart is racing, I'm happy, that this has finished, but, I'm so happy for her, she stood strong” says Anameka Pirini of Te Whakatōhea about their boxer and their efforts at the event.
14 boxers in total, all female, seven fights, the community of Kawerau say it’s something they're definitely proud of.
