Gisborne girl Lady-Joe TangaTaterekia, based in Australia, is bringing Hulanesian Fitness to NZ. It's a concept that combines all the beauty of Polynesian cultures into a cardio work out. Te Kāea caught up with Lady-Joe while she is here on her NZ tour.
Women of all shapes, sizes, ages and nationalities have come along to get their Hula on.
Lady-Joe TangataTerekia from Ngāti Porou who created the concept says, “Hulanesian Fitness is, even though it's based on Hula, on two components of Hula the Tamou and the Ami we base ourselves more on the Nesian flavours, which is an infusion of an array of all cultures.”
A mother of nine and expecting her next child, Hulanesian Fitness was a way to get her groove on.
“This was an opportunity for me not only to get my groove on but to get a bit of me back and then I thought man, if this is what it can do for me I know I can bring it for others,” says TangataTerekia.
Based in the Gold Coast but originally from Gisborne, she is on her NZ tour introducing the concept to the country.
TangataTerekia says it’s meant to empower woman, “It's feminine, it’s beautiful, it's dangerous on the hips and it unites women. It's about women feeling beautiful, women feeling unique and joining us together as one.”

After a decade of living in Australia, she will be moving back to NZ at the end of the year. She will be based in Hamilton, bringing Hulanesian to NZ communities.
