A Ngāti Maniapoto descendant is excelling in the sport of wheelchair basketball. In recent years he was selected for the Waikato Senior Team and his mentor has witnessed his progression and development.
CJ is only 16 years old. His accident occurred only three years ago, and since playing wheelchair basketball, has had a new outlook on life.
Their relationship has led to many positive outcomes.
Earlier this year he was named in the NZ Under 23 wheelchair basketball team and although it was a huge honour for him, he also has the desire to reach greater levels.
These two won’t let their disabilities get in the way of their dreams.
Next year will see new goals being achieved by Takiari, and another year of mentoring and educating the younger generation for Barton.
