With more than 70 horse riders and hundreds of spectators, the Tolaga Bay Beach Horse Races were bigger than ever this year.

The competition first started in the 70s, with seven races over different distances.

The first race of the day was for non-thoroughbred horses, with a number of 25 entries.  It’s one of the biggest races ever seen since the competition started.

Some riders travelled from overseas for this competition. Matānuku Parata lives in Perth but came home to take part in this annual competition. It’s also a great way for him to reconnect with his family and friends.

There's no doubt this competition will continue on for many years to come.
