Young woman killed in Police pursuit named

Police name 17-year-old Moana Titihuia Matthews the young person killed following a police pursuit at the weekend.

Matthews died at the scene where her vehicle crashed into a Rotorua stream.

Before the fatal accident Police say Matthews vehicle was seen driving through an intersection erratically and at speed.  Police patrol attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver continued at speed along Tarewa Road.

Rotorua Area Commander Inspector Bruce Horne says, “Serious crashes are also heart-breaking for police staff and those from other emergency services. This incident highlights the risk of driving at speed and the tragic consequences that can result when a driver refuses to stop and instead chooses to evade the police.

The matter has been referred to the ICPA.
