Leading Māori women from all over New Zealand have arrived at Wairaka Marae in Whakatāne for the annual Māori Women's Welfare League Inc. National Conference being hosted by Te Waiāriki, and it's using a local famous quote 'Kia Whakatāne au i ahau' to inspire the mind.

President Kataraina O'Brien took with her to the meeting major hopes and aspirations for the group and Māori women as a whole.

Two years ago Hannah Tamaki contested the presidency, at that time the intricacy of the League's Constitution was examined in the High Court.

Today the Waiariki region has presented seven paddles to the seven regions representing the strengths of the prestigious ancestries of Wairaka.
