Waikato police are urging all drivers to become 'safe drivers' to ensure safer families. This call comes following six recent crashes that occurred within the space of three hours, one of them a fatal crash.

Emergency services were called to State Highway One, near Karapiro in the weekend to a two car head on crash.

It is not yet known what caused the crash, however, two cars collided head on and a passenger of one of the vehicles died at the scene. The Waikato Serious Crash Unit is still investigating.

Just one hour later there were two further crashes in the area, one in Matamata where no injuries were reported, and one in Huntly, where there were minor injuries reported. While not as serious as the Karapiro crash, all crashes have the potential to cause devastation to families.

Police are stressing that safety is the message and adjusting your driving to suit the conditions is key.

They state "As the festive season approaches everyone using the roads needs to ensure they are safe drivers, road safety is no accident, and we want to make sure that all of the family is around the table to celebrate Christmas."
