Uenuku Charitable Trust gains mandate to negotiate historical claims for 'Te Korowai o Wainuiarua'

The Uenuku Charitable Trust has released a statement confirming its mandate to represent the descendants of Tamakana, Tamahaki and Uenuku-a-te Ao, na Tuhaikoro in negotiations for all historical Treaty of Waitangi claims under ‘Te Korowai o Wainuiarua.’

All claims relating to the Central Whanganui Large Natural Group will come under the Uenuku Charitable Trust after it held nine mandating hui of which it says 83 percent of those who participated over the 43 day process voted Yes to the Trust holding the mandate.

According to the Trust, “This vote of confidence is a step towards our goal of building a brighter future for our tamariki and mokopuna while ensuring whānau are engaged and informed to make important decisions. The full voting results are available for whānau to share and celebrate this significant achievement.”

The Uenuku Charitable Trust was established in early 2014 to provide representation for Uenuku hapū, marae, claimants and uri.
