Monday 25th of August will see the Native Affairs Kōwhiri 2014 team kick off a series of candidate debates for the 7 Māori Electorates.
Te Tai Tonga is up first and joining Mihingarangi Forbes in studio will be the current MP for Te Tai Tonga, Rino Tirikatene of the Labour Party, Ngaire Button who will stand in the electorate for the Māori Party, Georgina Beyers representing the Internet MANA Movement and Dora Langsbury who is vying for the seat on behalf of the Greens.
As well as hitting the candidates with the hard questions, the results of specially commissioned polls conducted in each of the 7 Māori seats will be revealed, with the preferred candidate result of each electorate broadcasting at 5:30 on Te Kāea.
Native Affairs will then delve deeper into that and more results of the poll which will highlight the major issues and asks voters which parties and policies, if any, stand out for them.
Along with the poll results, the Native Affairs team has travelled the length and breadth of the Māori electorates to find out what’s on people’s minds. The stories will screen during each of the debates and candidates will be invited to respond to the issues raised by the grass roots voters featured.
Te Tai Hauāuru candidates will face off in the second 1 hour special on Wednesday the 27th of August and all the debates will screen on Māori Television at 8:30pm and live streamed on the Māori Television website.
On Election night the Kōwhiri 2014 team will also provide in depth coverage live from the Māori electorates in a 5 hour election special which will simulcast on Māori Television and www.maoritelevision.com.
The broadcast and website will also provide real time updates and results as the votes are counted in each electorate and in-depth information and unique stories throughout the night.
It will be followed by a Review special at 9 am on Sunday the 21st of September where our team will speak with the successful candidates from each electorate and discuss what’s next.
