Te Pū Ao was first established in 2007 and are based at Te Parawhau Marae in Whangārei. The group won their first Tai Tokerau regionals in 2008 and have represented the region at te Matatini in 2009 in Tauranga Moana, 2011 in Waiohika and 2015 in Ōtautahi.
The group is led by Kaka and Morunga whānau and will be led by Matiu Apiata (male leader) and Muritere (female leader).
Te Pū Ao are the second to last group to take the stage today and have agreed to share a composition by Chey Aterea Milne titled “Papa Winiata." This song honours their beloved kaumatua who passed earlier this year and acknowledges his loyal guidance of the group through te reo me ona tikanga.
