Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti proudly represents the host rohe of Te Tairāwhiti and Ngāti Porou.
Tutored by Kerry-Ann Matahiki and Taiarahia Melbourne, this is Kawakawa Mai Tawhiti’s first time on the national stage.
Since its establishment, the group and kura has developed in strength whilst teaming up with Te Waha o Rerekohu Area School and Tolaga Bay Area School.
The kura adheres to the whakatauki, ‘Hei whakaora i te reo o Ngāti Porou me ōna tikanga.’
Led by kaitātaki wahine, Te Maringi Waara, and kaitātaki tāne, Ruawhaitiri Ngatai-Mahue, the first group to perform from the host rohe opened with a warm welcome to all the teams and supporters that have converged on Gisborne for the competition.
Here is the group’s waiata tira, 'I Te Tīmatanga'.
