Te Aurere crew honoured at Waitangi

Te Aurere crew honoured

Te Aurere crew and its support vessel, Ngāhiraka Mai Tawhiti, were today honoured for their navigation in excess of five thousand nautical miles, on their trip to Rapa Nui (Easter Island).

Led by the teachings of waka hourua exponent, Dr. Hekenukumai Busby, the 10-man crew of Te Aurere, captained by Stan Conrad (Te Aupōuri) were presented honourary awards today by Tumu Te Heuheu on behalf of the Waitangi Trust.

Testament to the conditions that these navigators experienced, from the original 10 that left Auckland on the voyage, 4 of those saw the journey through to its end, citing hypothermia amongst other conditions as the reason for their return home.

Amongst the other dignitaries there to see the awards was long-time proponent of the relationship between Te Puia and Te Aurere, Karl Johnston.
