Tamararo is considered one of the most prestigious regional competitions for kapa haka.
It's where five-time national champions Waihīrere hail from. It's also where you'll find Te Matatini powerhouse groups, Whangarā-mai-Tawhiti and Tū Te Manawa Maurea.
In their first time performing under a new name, Te Aitanga-a-Hauiti ki Uawa won the Tamararo Regional Competition, becoming the number one group for the East Coast.
According to Pele Takurua, “The things we do on the stage should be done on our marae and in our homes. We shouldn't just leave it for this realm.”
While one regional competition is over, another is just around the corner, with the Auckland Regionals next week.
